Our vision
In May 2022 we launched our new 2030 strategy. Our strategy was developed with engagement from our staff, patients and partners, throughout 2021 and consists of four strategic priorities which provide a framework to help the Trust meet the needs of the community, and the challenges faced by the local health and care system over the next five years.
Our strategic priorities are underpinned by our values and a series of enabling strategies including the people, quality, finance and estates strategies.
In May 2022, we refreshed our vision:
“To be trusted to provide consistently outstanding care and exemplary service”
The vision clearly and simply lets everyone know why we exist. It is aspirational, inspirational and enduring – it is our constant purpose and objective.
Our mission in providing high-quality, compassionate care for our communities has the following strategic themes:
- Quality – Consistently deliver quality standards, targeting health inequalities and involving patients in their care
- Thriving People – Support our people to thrive by recruiting and retaining the best, and creating an environment of learning, autonomy, and accountability.
- Seamless Service – Deliver seamless care for patients through effective collaboration and co-ordination of services within the Trust and with our partners.
- Continuous Improvement – Continuously improve services by adopting good practice, maximising efficiency and productivity, and exploiting transformation opportunities.
Our values
Our values describe what matters to us at the Trust. They are a promise of how we will carry out our work – how we will treat our patients, our staff and our partners.
We will:
Include
We value the diversity and experience of our community colleagues and partners, creating relationships and climates that provide an opportunity to share, collaborate and grow together.
Respect
We create a safe environment where we are curious of the lived experience of others, seek out best practice and are open to listening and hearing new ideas
Improve
We are committed to consistently delivering excellent services and continuously looking to improve through a creative workforce that feels empowered to act in service of our shared purpose.
More about our Trust
Our Trust was created in April 2000, following the merger of the former East Hertfordshire and North Hertfordshire NHS trusts. We run the following hospitals:
- Hertford County, Hertford

- Mount Vernon Cancer Centre (since April 2005)
- New Queen Elizabeth II (New QEII), Welwyn Garden City
We provide services to our local community of around 500,000 people, with the regional cancer centre supporting around 2 million people. We provide care to our community with an annual budget of around £350 million and more than 6,000 staff.
