Our head and neck surgery team at Lister Hospital provides comprehensive care for both benign and malignant conditions affecting the mouth, throat, larynx (voice box), salivary glands, and neck. We deliver expert surgical treatment for a wide range of conditions, including cancers of the oral cavity, oropharynx, larynx, and salivary glands, as well as non-cancerous tumours and structural abnormalities.
We adopt a robust multidisciplinary approach for managing head and neck cancers, working closely with colleagues in oncology, radiology, pathology, speech and language therapy, dietetics, and palliative care. Every patient benefits from a tailored treatment plan designed and agreed upon at specialist head and neck cancer MDT meetings, ensuring high-quality, coordinated care.
Advanced surgical technology is routinely used to improve patient outcomes and minimise complications. This includes nerve monitoring during major neck procedures to protect vital structures such as the facial and recurrent laryngeal nerves, which are crucial for facial expression and voice.
Our team is experienced in Transoral Robotic Surgery (TORS), a minimally invasive technique used primarily for selected tumours of the oropharynx and larynx. TORS offers several advantages, including improved visualisation for the surgeon, greater precision, faster recovery times, and the potential to avoid more invasive open procedures or extensive radiotherapy.
Our trans-nasal oesophagoscopy (TNO) service is one of the busiest in East of England. TNO is a minimally invasive procedure that allows direct examination of the upper aero-digestive tract (including the throat, voice box, gullet and stomach) using a slim, flexible endoscope passed through the nose. Unlike traditional endoscopy, TNO is performed under local anaesthetic, avoiding the need for sedation or general anaesthesia and a theatre slot. We offer LASER ablation of lesions through the scope when appropriate, at the same setting.
We also offer a dedicated voice clinic for patients with voice disorders, supported by specialist speech and swallow therapists. Patients undergoing treatment for head and neck cancer have access to a comprehensive support team, including a dedicated dietitian, to help maintain nutrition and quality of life before, during, and after treatment.
Our service is part of the wider East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust, which includes Mount Vernon Cancer Centre – one of the largest and most respected cancer centres in the UK – further enhancing the scope and depth of cancer care we provide.
Research and education are integral to our work. Our team contributes to ongoing clinical research and regularly presents at national and international meetings. A list of our recent publications and presentations is available below.
Referrals can be made via the NHS e-Referral Service (ERS) or by contacting the ENT department directly. GPs and other healthcare professionals are welcome to discuss cases with our consultants prior to referral for guidance.
