A narrowing of the carotid artery (in the neck) can lead to a stroke. We undertake carotid endarterectomy (surgical removal of the narrowing within the carotid artery) to reduce significantly the risk of future strokes. We are supported fully by our stroke consultant colleagues.
Patients with this condition are often operated on within a few days of being admitted to the Lister, thus maximising the benefit of surgery, reducing their risk of having a further stroke whilst waiting for an operation. This surgery is provided under both local and general anesthesia.
In 2014, our median wait time from symptom-to-surgery for this life-threatening condition was under 10 days – which is amongst the top 15 performing NHS trusts throughout the UK for shortest waiting times according to the National Vascular Registry.
