Lister Hospital is a high-volume, specialist centre for thyroid and parathyroid surgery, serving Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, and beyond. Our experienced surgical team performs a wide range of procedures, from hemithyroidectomies to total thyroidectomies with neck dissections for metastatic thyroid cancer. With over 300 thyroid and parathyroid operations carried out annually, we are the busiest centre for this type of surgery in the region.
We take a collaborative, patient-centred approach to care. All thyroid cancer cases are reviewed at our dedicated weekly multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings, which bring together surgeons, endocrinologists, oncologists, radiologists, pathologists, speech and language therapists, and Macmillan specialist nurses. This ensures each patient benefits from a personalised treatment plan supported by expert opinion across specialties. We also run a separate MDT for patients with hypercalcaemia/ hyperparathyroidism and have excellent working relationship with our Endocrinology colleagues.
We also work closely with interventional radiologists to offer minimally invasive, ultrasound-guided treatment for recurrent metastatic thyroid cancer in the neck. These joint theatre sessions enable us to deliver precise, tailored care using the latest techniques. Lister is proud to be the first centre in the UK to offer robotic-assisted thyroidectomy via a facelift (retroauricular) incision, leaving no visible neck scar. Our head and neck consultants – Mr Mochloulis, Mr Dimitriadis, and Mr Patel – are leading figures in this innovative field and co-organised the First International Meeting on Remote Access Thyroidectomy held at the Royal Society of Medicine, London in May 2024.
We utilise advanced technologies to enhance safety and outcomes. These include autofluorescence imaging to identify and preserve parathyroid glands during surgery, intraoperative parathyroid hormone (PTH) monitoring to confirm successful gland removal within minutes, and continuous nerve monitoring to protect the vocal cords. Mr. Mochloulis pioneered the use of continuous nerve monitoring in thyroid surgery in the UK and continues to train national and international surgeons through our popular annual course, which is consistently oversubscribed.
In addition, we are one of only a few centres in the UK to offer radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for benign thyroid nodules – a non-surgical, outpatient procedure that uses thermal energy to shrink nodules without the need for general anaesthetic or a neck incision. It minimises risks such as voice change and hypothyroidism. This is carried out in a monthly joint Radiologist/ENT consultant list, and we welcome referrals from across the UK.
We are proud to offer a Royal College of Surgeons of England-accredited post-CCT fellowship in thyroid and parathyroid surgery, training outstanding surgeons from around the world to refine their expertise in advanced endocrine surgery.
Research is central to our ethos. Our team regularly presents at international conferences and publishes in peer-reviewed journals. A list of recent publications and presentations can be found below.
Referrals can be made via the NHS e-Referral Service (ERS) or by contacting the ENT department directly. GPs and other healthcare professionals are welcome to discuss cases with our consultants prior to referral for guidance.
