Non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) is a blood test taken from the mother that uses cutting-edge DNA technology to evaluate with remarkable accuracy whether a pregnancy has a high chance of certain chromosomal conditions – including Trisomy 21 – Down’s Syndrome, Trisomy 18 – Edward’s Syndrome and Trisomy 13 – Patau’s Syndrome.
The blood test is taken by the antenatal and newborn screening co ordinator, who is a specialist midwife. You will receive extensive counselling prior to the blood test and bespoke after care if any chromosomal abnormalities are identified.
