East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust celebrated Healthcare Science Week.
Healthcare Science Week is an annual week-long celebration to promote the inspiring work of healthcare science professionals up and down the country, and showcases the positive impact staff make to patients’ lives.
Staff at the Mount Vernon Cancer Centre were invited to showcase members of their department and provided an educational insight for future healthcare scientists by reaching out to students at over 30 local schools with educational materials.
The campaign shone a light on staff from the Mount Vernon Cancer Centre in Northwood, which employs medical physicists, healthcare science practitioners and assistants to work across a range of specialisms providing patient diagnosis and treatment, and created educational material for local school children to inspire them to become the healthcare scientists of the future, here are some of their quotes:
Growing up, I was always encouraged to do a job that would make a positive impact on many people’s lives. As a healthcare professional, you are constantly challenged and work to improve the quality of life of patients, which makes each day incredibly rewarding and fulfilling!
Anitta Thomas – Assistant Physicist at East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust
I always wanted a career where I could help people. This career has allowed me to use academic training in physics to help improve patient care across a number of NHS trusts.
Andrew Shah – Head of Radiation Protection at East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust
I have worked for more than 30 years within the NHS as a clinical scientist. Working in the NHS can be tough, it’s true – But for me, it’s when I recognised our patients coming back for check-ups months and years after we’ve treated them – I know that if we’d not done our job, they simply wouldn’t still be alive. That is more rewarding than anything – and that’s why I turn up each day for work.
