More than £5,000 has been donated to the Lister Hospital-based Butterfly Volunteer Service, which helps support dying patients and those closest to them.
Austin’s Funeral Directors chose the award-winning service – which sees specially-trained volunteers provide companionship for end-of-life patients at the Stevenage hospital – as its charity of the year and raised £5,169 after a series of events throughout 2019.
The Hertfordshire-based business’ Managing Director Claire Austin visited the Lister to hand over the cheque to Abdellah El Alami, General Manager for Cancer Services at East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust, and Butterfly Volunteer Service Co-ordinator Angela Fenn.
Angela, who co-ordinates the service with help from donations made to the East and North Hertfordshire Hospitals’ Charity, said: “Thank you to the staff at Austin’s for their wonderful donation.
“The funds will help ensure our volunteers can continue to offer one-to-one support to patients at the end of their life, providing comfort and companionship – particularly to those with few or no visitors.”
The Butterfly Volunteer Service also received a £200 donation from the Rotary Club of Stevenage to mark Rotary Day last month.
