Earlier this month, Cancer Services Manager Alex Reekie (pictured) sprang into action whilst out at a local restaurant in Stevenage – coming to the aid of a fellow diner who was choking on their meal.
Alex’s quick intervention was thanks to the life-saving knowledge and skills gained from being a first aider. When noticing the diner was turning purple, Alex rushed to her aid and delivered abdominal thrusts, dislodging the food that was blocking her airway.
Speaking to The Comet, Alex credited her heroics to the St John Ambulance training she had completed and urges members of the public to consider embarking on the training themselves – there is even resources for all ages. More details can be found via the St John’s Ambulance website (https://www.sja.org.uk/courses).
Why should you consider learning first aid?
In an emergency, every second counts. Whether it’s a road accident, a choking incident, or a cardiac arrest, having basic first aid knowledge can be the difference between life and death. In the UK, where we know ambulance response times can vary, immediate action by a bystander is often critical.
First aid skills empower individuals to respond effectively during crises, stabilising conditions until professional help arrives. Simple actions – such as placing someone in the recovery position, performing CPR, or controlling bleeding – can significantly improve survival rates and reduce the risk of long-term complications.
It’s easy to think first aid is just about life-or-death situations. Everyday incidents like cuts, burns, sprains, or fainting are common, and knowing how to respond promptly can prevent minor injuries from escalating into something more serious.
Learning first aid also boosts confidence in stressful situations where panic may hinder response. Training provides the knowledge, composure and confidence needed to act swiftly and correctly.
In addition to St John Ambulance, organisations such as the British Red Cross also offer accessible courses across the UK, tailored for different needs – from workplace requirements (who may be able to fund training or access discounted rates) to paediatric first aid for parents and carers.
First aid is a life skill that everyone should possess. It creates a safer community where people are prepared to help each other in times of need. So, please consider enrolling in a first aid course if you are able – you might save a life, possibly even someone you love.
