Following an application submitted to the Department of Health and Social Care in 2024, the previously named East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust has since been awarded teaching status and are now recognised as a Teaching Trust.
The trust – which runs Hertford County Hospital in Hertford, Lister Hospital in Stevenage, New QEII Hospital in Welwyn Garden City and Mount Vernon Cancer Centre in Northwood – is now named East and North Hertfordshire Teaching NHS Trust.
The trust showcased its commitment to teaching, training and education of its current and future workforce with a portfolio of supporting evidence.
Supported by the University of Hertfordshire, University of Cambridge and UCL Medical School, the trust’s partnerships with universities have strengthened its role in healthcare education.
As part of the process for teaching status, the trust has appointed Professor Zoe Aslanpour, Dean of the Medical School at the University of Hertfordshire as a non-executive director on the board. This follows the appointment of Dr Justin Daniels, Trust Medical Director to the Board of Governors at University of Hertfordshire last year.
East and North Hertfordshire Teaching NHS Trust provided placements for more than 1,300 student nurses and 227 student doctors in 2023-24. The trust also supported career development with 268 members of staff enrolled onto an apprenticeship in 2024.
Anita Day, chair of East and North Hertfordshire Teaching NHS Trust said:
“This is an exciting time for the trust, our staff, students and patients. Adding ‘Teaching’ to our name is a clear and visible reflection of our ongoing commitment to teaching, training and education.”
Adam Sewell-Jones, chief executive of East and North Hertfordshire Teaching NHS Trust said:
“We are proud to be recognised as a teaching trust. This helps us to attract and retain the best people to ensure we can provide high quality, compassionate care for our patients.”
Dr Justin Daniels, paediatrician medical director of East and North Hertfordshire Teaching NHS Trust said:
“I am delighted that the trust has been awarded teaching trust status, this reflects the hard work that happens day-in, day-out across our hospital sites to ensure all our students and trainees receive high quality education.
“We are particularly pleased to be recognised as a Teaching NHS Trust ahead of our ongoing work with our partners at the University of Hertfordshire as we prepare for the opening of the new Hertfordshire Medical School in 2026.”
