Enric Vilar was appointed as Consultant Nephrologist at the Lister Hospital and Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Hertfordshire in 2013. Having graduated in medicine in 2001 from Cambridge University, he moved to London where he trained on the North Thames Nephrology training scheme. During this period he was awarded a Kidney Research UK Fellowship for a PhD involving dialysis-related research based at the Lister Hospital.
His subspecialty interests include general and acute nephrology, chronic kidney disease, advanced kidney care planning, haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis, home dialysis treatments and metabolic aspects of kidney disease.
He is lead clinician for the home haemodialysis programme, and jointly with Dr Praveen Jeevaratnam, is lead clinician for the Lister Hospital main dialysis unit. Jointly with Dr Sivakumar Sridharan, he manages the Bedford Hospital renal clinic. He performs interventional procedures including renal biopsies placement of vascular access for dialysis. He manages a specialist clinic for patients with adult polycystic kidney disease on tolvaptan.
He holds various management roles within the Lister Renal Unit. He is actively engaged in clinical research and trials, collaborating with the Department of Postgraduate Medicine at the University of Hertfordshire, and supervising PhD students.
