On National Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialist Day, we are celebrating our clinical nurse specialists (CNS) who provide compassionate care across the trust’s cancer services.
Clinical Nurse Specialists are highly skilled professionals who provide expert care and support to patients throughout their cancer journey. They coordinate and deliver personalised care, and address both physical and emotional needs.
Cancer CNS colleagues share their thoughts below about the pride they have in their roles and how their care supports patients:
Cancer clinical care coordinators
“We are proud to support patients by helping to resolve issues throughout their cancer journey, offering a listening ear and comfort during challenging times and guiding them towards the right service to meet their needs.”
Lymphodema CNS
“We help patients adopt self-care strategies to minimise the impact lymphodema has on their lifestyle. Working with patients and their carers or relatives, we have achieved changes together which have had a huge and positive effect on patients’ daily life. We also educate staff, as early detection and intervention leads to better outcomes for patients.” Head and neck CNS “We are proud to be Head and Neck Clinical Nurse Specialists because we have the privilege of caring for patients and their families at some of the most vulnerable and life-altering moments of their lives.”
Renal cell cancer CNS
“I have worked as a cancer CNS for 18 years. Being able to build trust, listen to a patient’s fears and advocate on their behalf has been deeply meaningful, reinforcing my commitment to providing compassionate patient-centred care every day.”
Neuro-oncology CNS
“As neuro-oncology clinical nurse specialists, we have the honour of supporting our patients and their families through their cancer journey. We are privileged to work with an excellent multidisciplinary team to deliver high quality centred care.”
CNS for skin cancers and melanoma
“We support patients through some of the most frightening and challenging moments of their lives providing not only expert care but also reassurance, compassion and continuity when it matters most.”
Gynae cancer CNS
“We support women through some of the most difficult times in their lives. Our role allows us to provide expert care, guidance and reassurance while advocating for and supporting our patients.
Breast cancer CNS
We take pride in being part of the breast cancer clinical nurse specialist team where we combine clinical excellence with patient advocacy to provide reassurance, dignity and unwavering support throughout each stage of care.”
Prostate and bladder cancer CNS
“We take pride in supporting patients with their symptoms to help make them more
comfortable, providing guidance and reassurance to their families and educating them to make positive, healthy changes in their lives.”
Lung cancer CNS
“We hope that through our support and dedication, we can help reduce stress and make patients’ experience as manageable and positive as possible. We advocate for our patients offering emotional support, expert symptom management and guidance throughout their treatment journey.”
Acute Oncology Service
“Every day in the Acute Oncology Service, we support patients through treatment complications, oncological emergencies and unexpected admissions providing expert care, reassurance and coordination when it matters most. We are proud to advocate, support and make a difference for our patients and their families.”
Thank you to trust colleagues for the care you provide.
