We have operating theatres at the Lister hospital only, covering both inpatient and day surgery. Each year our team performs around 23,000 operations.

We care for our patients by making sure operations are carried out in the very safest, most modern surroundings. If you choose to have an operation at our hospital you will be treated as an individual with their own health care needs.

All of our patients are treated in a non-biased and non judgemental way, with every patient’s beliefs and culture being respected.

Our team is always looking for ways to improve our service. We keep up-to-date with current research and progress as well as assessing and reviewing our skills.

Although our patients are generally from within east and north Hertfordshire, patients from other areas can choose to be referred to one of our hospitals.

We can care for patients in the following surgical specialities:

  • Urology (including robotic surgery)
  • Colorectal
  • Ear, nose and throat
  • Plastic surgery

  • Vascular surgery
  • Pain service

Pioneering surgery

Prostatectomy – Robotic surgery
Our operating theatres are one of a few theatres within the country to carry out robotic surgery. The system is the first totally intuitive laparoscopic surgical robot in existence. We use the robot for laparoscopic radical prostatectomy and pyloroplasty.

We are also the first in the UK to use a radio emission laser or evolve biolitec laser for prostatectomy’s within day surgery.

We are continually developing the use of minimally invasive procedures in all types of surgery. All of these techniques help reduce the length of hospital stay for patients.

Visiting our theatres

Members of our community can come to visit our theatres. However, this is by appointment only because of infection control and patient confidentiality. If you would like to arrange a visit, please call our switchboard on 01438 314 333 and ask to speak to our theatre managers.
