Radiotherapy

Private patients are able to receive inpatient and outpatient radiotherapy treatments at Mount Vernon Cancer Centre on state of art Equipment. This includes CT simulators for the planning of treatment and linear accelerators for the delivery, including True Beam Linear Accelerators and Cyberknife. We have a dedicated linear accelerator for private patients.

CyberKnife

The CyberKnife® system offers our private patients theAuto_general-NC10_0233-_DSC2115 very latest in cancer treatment technology. This method of treatment is incomparable in its accuracy and provides a non-invasive alternative to surgery for those who suffer from tumours and other medical conditions that have previously been considered inoperable or untreatable. It is routinely used to treat brain, head and neck, spine, lung, liver, pancreas and prostate tumours in addition to nodal or other tumour recurrences. Click for more information and a virtual tour.

Brachytherapy

This treatment delivers a high dose of radiotherapy, which has a reduced impact on the surrounding normal tissues as the source or seeds are implanted directly into the tumour. Brachytherapy is commonly used to treat gynaecological and prostate cancers, but is also used to treat other cancers, where appropriate. As a private patient receiving brachytherapy, you may have to stay in the hospital as an inpatient for a few days.

Nuclear Medicine

Private nuclear medical care includes the use of radioactive nuclides for the investigation, treatment and imaging of cancer and non-cancer patients. Most appointments can be carried out in an outpatient environment, however, some radioactive iodine therapies would involve the patient being admitted to one of our two new en-suite rooms as a private inpatient for a number of days.

Nursing & Macmillan Specialist Team

Nursing at Mount Vernon is focused on individualised holistic care for all patients and their families. There is also an established Macmillan Team at the cancer centre, which consists of Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNSs), a team of dieticians and social workers. This team helps to improve and streamline the process of care for all patients throughout their treatment by offering information, advice and support. All these services are available to our private patients.

Chemotherapy

Private patients from all tumour site groups are treated in the state-of-the-art Chemotherapy Outpatients Suite, where patients are able to receive both simple and complex cytotoxic drug regimens and targeted therapies.

SpaceOAR hydrogel

SpaceOAR hydrogel is an absorbable hydrogel that temporarily creates space between the prostate and the rectum, protecting the rectum from radiation exposure during prostate radiation therapy.

Why should I have SpaceOAR hydrogel?

The goal of radiation therapy to treat prostate cancer is to maximize the radiation dose to the prostate to kill the cancer cells while avoiding radiating surrounding normal tissue. Rectal injury can occur because the rectum sits next to the prostate and can accidentally receive high radiation doses and damage to healthy tissue can cause side effects. The “OAR” in SpaceOAR stands for “Organ At Risk”, and with radiation therapy to the prostate, this organ is the rectum. The SpaceOAR pushes the rectum away from the prostate to reduce radiation does given to the rectum.
