Dr Ellis has been a consultant rheumatologist and general physician at East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust since July 2001. He is responsible for inpatients with a wide variety of medical disorders as well as running regular rheumatology outpatient clinics and a specialist auto-immune Connective Tissue Disease clinic.

Dr Ellis trained at St. Georges Hospital, Tooting and qualified in 1991. He undertook his speciality training in North East Thames between 1996 and 2001. Dr Ellis has particular interests in multi system rheumatic disorders, such as systemic lupus erythematosus and vasculitis. He also has an interest in the association of such conditions with other medical problems, including heart disease.

Dr Ellis is involved closely in medical education at all levels and holds the position of honorary senior clinical lecturer in affiliation with the Royal Free/UCL Medical School. He is the Training Programme Director for Rheumatology in the East of England and an examiner for the Membership exam of the Royal College of Physicians. He co-hosts the PACES clinical exam at the Lister hospital site once a year.

Dr Ellis has supported the improvement and development of patient care within the Hospital and of our local rheumatology services. This has included initiatives such as patient education afternoons for arthritis.

Dr Ellis has published a number of case reports and contributed to Rheumatology chapters in textbooks. He has co-written two articles on rational testing in Rheumatology which have been published in the BMJ, most recently on the use of anti-nuclear antibody.

Dr Ellis additionally has management responsibilities and is currently the Clinical Director for Rheumatology, Dermatology and Neurology within the Trust.
