Dr Mead studied at the Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine which in his final year became University College London from which he graduated with distinction in 2000. Initially he worked in London in the Gastroenterology Unit at the Royal Free before moving down to the Wessex region with his wife and family where he became a Specialist Registrar in 2004. He undertook additional years training as a Specialist Hepatology Registrar and researching into the early diagnosis of oesophageal and colorectal cancers as part of an MD theseis. He was awarded his research doctorate in 2013.

He also trained as a clinical fellow in advanced diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy including an international fellowship in Tokyo, Japan (The National Cancer Centre, a world centre of excellence). He learnt to identify and remove early gastric, oesophagael and colorectal cancers. He further trained in a national centre of excellence (Portsmouth Hospitals) studying Barrett's oesophagus with Prandeep Bhandari.

Prior to joining the Trust he worked as a Consultant Gastroenterologist in Addenbrookes developing skills diagnosing and managing inflammatory bowel disease and diarrhoeal illnesses.

He has a strong interest in training junior doctors and enjoys talking about the virtues of Gastroenterology as the best specialist interest.
