QEII hospital celebrates 50 years of patient care with a letter from Her Majesty The Queen

Staff at the QEII hospital in Welwyn Garden City were thrilled to receive a letter from Buckingham Palace in which Her Majesty ‘remembers with fondness her visits to the opening of the hospital in 1963 and as well as the opening of the Queens Wing in 1993.’  The letter goes on to say ‘The Queen sends her best wishes and congratulations to all hospital staff, volunteers and supporters for their dedication in caring for their patients and members of the community in Hertfordshire.’

The celebration marked exactly 50 years to the day since Her Majesty The Queen declared the hospital open, and reflected on the great work of so many staff and volunteers.  It included a service of thanksgiving in the hospital chapel, followed by presentations to the longest serving staff, and the opportunity for staff to get together to celebrate and share memories of the hospital.

Nick Carver, Chief Executive, said, ‘It’s been a really wonderful day.  It has been fantastic to celebrate with our staff, retirees, volunteers and local dignitaries.  The team here at the QEII have touched some many thousands of lives over the last half-century.  The QEII team is an exceptional one, as I’m sure local people will agree, and it has been touching to hear their stories.’
