Vascular surgery encompasses a range of surgical conditions related mainly to blood vessels throughout the whole body (with the exception of the heart and the brain). Nationally it is now its own surgical sub-specialty, and as a service has been provided at the Lister for over 20 years.
The vascular surgery service at the Lister continues to grow. Currently we have four full time vascular consultants and there is a consultant vascular surgeon on-call 24/7. They are supported by many junior doctors and other allied health professionals. Members of the team have lectured at many national and international vascular meetings. We have regular inpatient and day surgery operating lists, as well as outpatient clinics. We run both diabetic foot and vascular multi-disciplinary team meetings.
The service’s expansion over the years reflects:
- the clinical needs of an ageing local population
- evidence-based improved outcomes for surgical intervention
- the combination of advanced surgical and interventional radiology techniques.
Our radiology team colleagues offer MRI, CT and Doppler ultrasound (Duplex) imaging for operative planning and surveillance. Our interventional radiologists undertake angiograms/angioplasties with daily lists. Those undergoing vascular surgery at the Lister are often reviewed by our specialist vascular anaesthetists prior to undergoing their procedure. We have a large intensive care unit to support patients following complex vascular procedures, as required.
