Respiratory Medicine is concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of conditions affecting the lungs. The department provides an extensive service managing conditions including:
- Asthma & Allergy
- Lung Cancer
- Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
- Bronchiectasis
- Pulmonary Fibrosis
- Pleural Disease
- Occupational Related Lung Disease
- Obstructive Sleep Apnoea
Outpatient clinics are held at Lister, QEII and Hertford County Hospital and there are dedicated clinics for lung cancer, asthma, sleep disorder and pleural effusions. There is a lung multidisciplinary team (MDT) meeting once a week for the management of patient with lung cancer. We have a visiting thoracic surgeon from Papworth once a week who attends the lung MDT and does an outpatient clinic at Lister. Procedures carried out in the department includes:
- Bronchoscopy (530 a year)
- Local Anaesthetic Thoracoscopy (60 a year)
- Indwelling Pleural Catheters
- Pulmonary function Tests
Inpatient services are provided at both Lister and QEII hospital and the wards have a dedicated area to provide intensive monitoring of patients with respiratory problems and provide non-invasive ventilation if required.
