CyberKnife

The CyberKnife opened to paitents in September 2010. It gives us a brand new way to treat some patients who may have run out of options or have been told their cancer is inoperable. The CyberKnife has an ability to deliver a high dose of radiotherapy treatment to a cancer, whilst avoiding the surrounding normal tissues – the main treatment constraint when giving radiotherapy.

It uses real-time tracking capabilities to deliver high-dose radiation to tumours with pin-point accuracy – including those that move every time a patient breathes. It does not require the use of stabilising frame or uncomfortable breath-holding techniques which makes the experience more comfortable for the patient.

The CyberKnife’s accuracy means we can treat some patients who are not suitable for traditional radiotherapy. Also some patients who are too unwell to undergo surgery may benefit from this treatment.

Typically treatments using the CyberKnife are completed over one to five days.
