Biography
Tom McNicholas initially qualified at St Bartholomew’s Hospital in London and trained at the St Peter’s Hospitals and the Institute of Urology. He established the first Urology department at the Lister Hospital in 1991, was Honorary Senior Lecturer at the Institute of Urology, London and is Visiting Professor at the Faculty of Health and Human Sciences, University of Hertfordshire.
Tom’s main clinical and research interests include all prostate disease, urological ultrasound, stones, lithotripsy, andrology and "pain free" investigation and treatment. He has been a clinical trial investigator and co-ordinator in multiple pharmaceutical and device studies and is trained in radical open, laparoscopic and robotic surgery for prostatic cancer. Currently he is a reviewer for the NHS Health Technology Assessment programme and a Specialist Advisor to the NICE Interventional Procedures Programme. Over the past 20 years, he has been invited to speak at many international conferences and has published over 120 peer reviewed papers. He is a co-author of a chapter on BPH in the Urology world's “bible”, the latest 10th edition of Campbell-Walsh Urology.
Mr. McNicholas developed the first “Shared care” protocols for BPH, in the UK, investigates laser, laparoscopic and high energy techniques and established a framework for the national dissemination of ultrasound expertise for the NHS Modernisation Agency. He has taught on a wide selection of specialist topics in the UK, USA, Europe, South America and South East Asia.
