Biography

Dr Binder did his undergraduate medical training in Cape Town and postgraduate medical training in the UK. Rheumatology specialist training was carried out in Cambridge, and then the North East Thames area. He was appointed to the consultant post at the Lister Hospital in 1988, and worked as a single-handed consultant until 2001, when Dr Ellis joined the department. In addition to his medical degree he obtained a B Sc Med degree in renal pathology and MD in the investigation and treatment of shoulder disorders, with most the research being done in Cambridge.

Research interests have included the role of Proteus in triggering RA, treatment of soft tissue rheumatism, Behcets syndrome, Sjogrens syndrome, lupus, and pseudo-gout.  Dr Binder has over 100 publications and presentations of original research and has written 3 chapters in the Oxford Textbook of Rheumatology, and chapters on radiological assessment, and pain management. His current interest includes the treatment of neck pain and whiplash with publications in Clinical Evidence (undated every 6 months) and a review article in the British Medical Journal.

Dr Binder has facilitated a team based approach to rheumatology care with specialist nursing, a ‘help-line’ and patient education sessions all ensuring the patients needs were kept central to the changes in our service.
