Biography

Dr Sharma treats uro-oncological tumours (germ cell cancers - including testicular carcinoma, renal cell carcinoma, bladder cancer, and prostate) at the Trust. He is also the acute oncology lead at the Lister and has been involved in developing an efficient acute oncology team, which includes senior nurses and junior doctors.

He has worked in a number of different cancer centres - including Royal Marsden Hospital, Mount Vernon Hospital, St Bartholomew's Hospital, Charing Cross Hospital, Maidstone Hospital, University College London Hospital, and Chelsea and Westminster Hospital.

He is the principal chief investigator for clinical trials in prostate, bladder, kidney and testicular cancers. His special interests include glutamine metabolism in cancer and he has been involved in clinical trials looking at targeting this pathway in kidney and breast cancer. He also has a keen interest in the use of high-dose chemotherapy/stem cell transplants in testicular cancer. Dr Sharma has over 30 peer-reviewed articles, two book chapters and he is on the editorial board of three international oncology journals.

Dr Sharma is in charge of registrar teaching and is part of the MRCP oncology exam board. He leads the teenage and young adults and germ cell cancer teams at the Trust and is involved in writing national guidelines for cancer.
