Biography

Dr Winocour is a consultant Physician to the East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust and Honorary Senior Lecturer at RFHUCH medical school. He qualified in 1979, received his MD degree from the University of Glasgow and then undertook further training in Manchester and Newcastle. His MD thesis was on the subject of control and complications in insulin-treated diabetes mellitus. Dr Winocour's clinical and research interest in diabetes and endocrinology has resulted in over 70 original articles in peer-reviewed journals. Currently he is co-director of a diabetes renal research programme and the Honorary Chairman of the Association of British Clinical Diabetologists.

In 2000 and 2006 Dr Winocour coordinated a national survey of specialist secondary care diabetes services that covered issues of medical, nursing, podiatric and dietetic staffing which was published in Diabetic Medicine. More recently he has reported on the practical issues of meeting targets in the routine management of diabetes care, casting light on the national and international guidelines in routine clinical care.

Dr Winocour is currently a member of the National Strategic Services Liaison Group at the Department of Health, working alongside the National Clinical Director for Diabetes, and Clinical Director for Diabetes and Endocrinology in East and North Herts NHS Trust. He has coordinated adolescent and transitional diabetes care at QE2 hospital alongside Dr Andy Raffles since 1998.
